Skuttlebot began as a personal robotics experiment and unexpectedly found an audience of millions.

Turns out, people weren't just interested in what a robot could do. They cared about who he was.

PEOPLE WANTED A SIDEKICK.

CUTE WASN'T
THE WHOLE STORY.

Early Skuttlebot was remotely puppeteered, including the personality people came to know: curious, mischievous, fallible and fundamentally well-intentioned.

That personality mattered. People didn't want another appliance or a toy whose novelty disappeared after five minutes.

They wanted someone to explore with.

WHAT IF THE PERSONALITY WASN'T PUPPETEERED?

THE ROBOT WAS
ONLY HALF THE PROBLEM.

Making Skuttlebot move was one problem. Giving him memory, continuity, judgment, curiosity and a persistent personality was something else entirely.

Skuttlebot arrived just as AI entered an extraordinary period of development. The technology needed to make that next step practical and accessible was advancing quickly — but it wasn't there yet.

So Skuttlebot waited. And we kept building.

As AI became more capable and accessible, the original question became possible to pursue: what would it take to build the sidekick people thought they were already meeting?

That question led to Althea.

PEOPLE DON'T JUST WANT SMARTER MACHINES. THEY WANT SYSTEMS WORTH KNOWING. AND MOST OF ALL, WORTH TRUSTING.
